Bulgaria's Varna region is a fabulously unusual destination for a beach break with a difference. This northern stretch of Bulgaria's Black Sea is fantastically up-and-coming, and certainly rivals even the Costas and the Canaries. Holidaymakers can make the most of a bargain break to the Varna region and continue to enjoy great value for money when they arrive.
The lively resort of Golden Sands is great for those with children, with a lovely beach that certainly lives up to its name. There is a promenade full of bars, restaurants and shops overlooking the wide stretch of sand, with plenty of creature comforts for all to enjoy. The sports centre also has a wide variety of activities on offer, making it fabulous for children too.
For a little pampering, there is a spa in Golden Sands, whilst the area's famous springs and the well-renowned healing properties of the water are a unique and indulgent attraction.
For those seeking a more active break, Albena is an excellent choice; this area is known as the Black Sea's sports capital, and is a purpose-built resort that lies on the edge of the Baltata nature reserve. Guests here can enjoy a fabulously extensive array of watersports on the lovely beach, or even choose to head for the forest-covered hills behind the beach for a little trekking.
Both Varna and St Konstantin benefit from a wide selection of shops, museums and galleries, making this a good place to take in the fascinating local culture.
